Week 5 – Overdubs

It’s now Week 5 of the Michael Jackson’s Beat It cover for out Multitrack session and reflecting on what was produced Drums, Bass, Guitar & Vocal tracks. This week we are working on recording the overdubs for the vocals, the guitar solo and the piano track. We started by recording the guitar solo because it was the most hardest thing to do, Danny had been practicing every hard to pull off this solo as it was a very demanding piece and needed someone who was good on the guitar. We set up in the main recording room and used a Shure SM57, Electro Voice RE20 and AKG C414 microphone int he room. The Shure SM57 and the Electro Voice RE20 was placed them both close up the amplifier while we used the AKG C414 as a room microphone. We set the the gain on the amp on high. Recording the overdubs for the guitars was the same as all the other guitar sessions, everything was done by the second take.

After recording the overdub guitars we moved on to recording the piano notes, Danny was the one who know the correct rhythm and keys to play the piano but however we all though Danny has been doing too many performances in the studio so George was the one chosen to play the piano is Danny’s place. No microphones needed to be used, the piano could be plugged into the inputs int he recording room. However there was a buzzing noise that came up into pro tools caused by the piano so we increased the volume of the piano to max and the mixer volume lower so we could get a correct the signal to noise ratio that canceled out the buzzing noise. It also took only two takes to fully be done with the piano recording.

Finally it was time to recored the back in vocals for the song and helping me was the other two performers for this song, Danny & George. Using a AKG C414 that was settled up in the dead room with a pop shield and a omni-directional polar pattern, sadly we didn’t have enough headphones, we had only one for the three of us so instead George got one of his headphones, Danny used the uni’s headphones while I had to stand close to Danny listening ever so closely to the song just so I ca know were I was within the song. Again it took two takes till we was done and that was it, everything was into pro tools, the drums, bass, guitar, vocals, piano and the overdubs, the only thing left is doing is mixing the song individually.
